Course outline

A common problem is to find a suitable and acceptable shift pattern for continuous working with one team rostered at all times, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This course will take you through the many options available with the advantages and disadvantages of each.

• Traditional approach (weekly hours rostered; holiday taken from gross weekly hours; additional hours worked paid as overtime; staffing levels usually including an allowance for absence)
• Annualised Hours approach (hours are calculated on an annual basis; holiday is often rostered or partially rostered; overtime is usually eliminated or substantially reduced; owed hours; shutdowns)
• Traditional versus Annualised Hours
• A typical Annualised Hours calculation
• 8 versus 12 hour shifts
• Holiday and sickness cover
• 4 team systems
• 5 team systems
• Systems other than 4 and 5 teams, such as 4.5 and 6 teams, and when they can be used to good effect
• Reduced working week and the impact on 24/7 systems

Shift patterns

Examples of commonly used shift patterns are included in the course material. However, more comprehensive lists of shift patterns are available at a 20% discount for delegates as long as they are ordered within a week of attending the course. Anyone who is considering, or in the process of, changing or introducing a 24/7 system. The course will give them a thorough overview of all the different shift options available with examples of commonly used shift patterns with their pros and cons.
